What is spot color in printing process?

Spot color ink refers to a kind of premixed specific color ink, such as fluorescent yellow, pearl blue, metal, gold, silver ink, etc., it is not mixed by CMYK four colors, chromatography means accurate color.

Spot color has the following four features:

1.Accuracy
Each of the chromatography has its own fixed hue, so it can guarantee the accuracy of color in printing, thus the problem of color transfer accuracy can be solved to a great extent.

2、Participatory
Specific color generally uses solid color to define the color, not matter how light the color is. Definitely, textile special color halftone printing to present any shade and hue of sport color.

3、Opacity
Spot color ink provides a covering property, and it is opaque and covered available.

4、Wide color domain
The color gamut of the color library is wide, which exceeds RGB’s representation color field, let alone the color space of CMYK. Therefore, a significant part of color is not presented in CMYK four-color printing ink.

Spot color ink is manufactured by pre-mixing or printing ink factory

Spot color ink is manufactured by pre-mixing or printing ink factory. It is not printed and synthesized by C,M,Y and K, but a specific ink to print. For each spot color of printed matter, there is a special color version corresponding to the printing. We are able to use spot colors to make colors more accurate. Although the color cannot be accurately represented on the computer, the exact color of the color on the paper can be seen through the pre-printed patch card of the standard color matching system. For example, the Pantone color matching system creates a very detailed color card to us.

The difference between Spot color and CMYK printing?

The color of spot color printing ink is in accordance with the principle of subtractive colors, which provides relatively low color brightness and high saturation; To make a good color, spot color-block generally use solid printing and add ink feeding quantity properly. When the thickness of the ink layer is large, the change of ink thickness will decrease the sensitivity of color change, so it is easier to get the ink color uniform and thick printing effect.
The color-block printed by the four-color printing process is composed of a certain proportion of dots. In addition, the thickness of the ink layer must be strictly controlled while dot printing, and ink color intensity will have to be easily changed in accordance with thickness of the ink layer and the condition of printing process. The extent of dot changes will lead to color change. Moreover, color block will be changed by any colors of its own color component, and bad color will be doubled. It is not east to get good color if we use four-color printing process. In addition, it may appear color deviation because semi-finished color is controlled not easily.

Besides, the four-color printing is obtained by the combination of subtractive process absorption and additive color method, which provides relatively tall lightness and lower saturation. In general, people tend to use four-color printing process for light color block, since low coverage to ink of a paper.
